    <title>Go Daddy Set to Hit 40 Million Domains Milestone on Wednesday</title>
    <description>
Go Daddy set to hit another milestone.
About six months after crossing the 30 million domain name mark, The Go Daddy Group is set to surpass 40 million domains under management, most likely on Wednesday. So if you register a domain name tomorrow, you might get some extra notoriety if you time it just right.
Ten years ago there were only about 17 million domain names registered, and now there is a single registrar with more than twice that many domains under management. When you do the math, it&amp;#8217;s no surprise the company grossed about $750 million last year.
It was on March 10, 2000, coincidentally the same day Go Daddy is likely to hit 40 million domains under management, that the .com bubble is generally thought of to have &amp;#8220;burst&amp;#8221;, with the NASDAQ topping out at 5132.52. In the period that followed, many people and companies let their domain names expire. It was during this time that the domain name gold rush caught its second wind.
Network Solutions was the biggest registrar at the time. Ten years later it has only about 6.5 million domain names under its umbrella.
Given the role Go Daddy played in bringing domain names to the mass market, I&amp;#8217;m somewhat surprised it wasn&amp;#8217;t nominated to The .Com 25. But rather than look at the past, I&amp;#8217;m sure the company has its eyes on a bigger milestone: 50 million domains under management. At this pace, it could hit that number later this year.

    <title>.Org Eyes Leadership Role in IDN Top Level Domain Names</title>
    <description>
.Org registry PIR wants to bring best practices to IDN top level domain names.
One of the big questions facing registries of existing top level domain names is how they should pursue Internationalized Domain Name &amp;#8220;equivalents&amp;#8221; of their domain names when they become available. These so-called IDN.IDN domain names will be available once new gTLDs &amp;#8212; such as .nyc and .music &amp;#8212; come out.
Last month we learned more about VeriSign&amp;#8217;s plans for .com and .net; today I reached out to Lance Wolak, Director of Marketing &amp;#038; Product Management for Public Interest Registry (PIR), which manages .org.
PIR hopes to take a leading role in IDN top level domain names, as it has in other initiatives such as DNSSEC.
&amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re not primarily commercially driven in what we do,&amp;#8221; explained Wolak.  &amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re really driven to do what helps and protects the domain name registrant.&amp;#8221;
When it comes to IDN top level domain names, PIR wants to show support for various communities.
&amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re doing this in the public interest and to show our support and respect for the different language communities,&amp;#8221; said Wolak.  &amp;#8220;Idn.idn is a technology that we want to see move forward.&amp;#8221;
IDN.org domain names, with the standard .org at the end, have been available in many languages since the middle of the last decade. Wolak said that many of these have been registered for search engine optimization purposes (i.e., exact match to what the searcher types in his or her language/script).
Wolak said it would be premature for PIR to give definite plans for .org-as-IDN domains, given that new TLD guidelines aren&amp;#8217;t finalized yet.
&amp;#8220;Right now we are watching the information that&amp;#8217;s coming out of ICANN, and looking over the Draft Applicant Guidebook,&amp;#8221; said Wolak. &amp;#8220;Until that is finalized, we won&amp;#8217;t have a hundred percent picture of the requirements to launch a new gTLD, which would include IDN TLDs.  So we don&amp;#8217;t have anything to announce on how many scripts we&amp;#8217;ll go after, which ones, etc.&amp;#8221;
Wolak noted that, in addition to Chinese script, Cyrillic and Arabic, PIR is looking at other popular scripts that have large populations behind them. Script tables are currently being developed for some scripts sets, including Arabic. PIR has been working with the community as it develops the tables. In addition to settling the tables, there are other issues for IDN TLDs that need to be worked out, such as current getting them to work with email systems.
There are still a number of open issues for IDN TLDs. But regardless of how they develop, PIR wants to be a thought leader.
&amp;#8220;We want to take the approach that we can bring the best practices with what we&amp;#8217;re doing in the .org space to a new IDN TLD,&amp;#8221; said Wolak.

    <title>Sedo?s Domain Market Study: 2009 Overview and Outlook into 2010</title>
    <description>This is a guest post written by Simonetta Batteiger, Director of Sales Operations North America. The article discusses Sedo&amp;#8217;s 2009 Market Study (that&amp;#8217;s a link to the pdf file), which was recently released. The information in the study is valuable to domain investors and can be helpful in seeing market conditions and trends.
&amp;#8212;&amp;#8212;&amp;#8212;&amp;#8212;-
Looking for some domain inspiration? Check out the latest Sedo Market Study to help you identify market trends and new opportunities! Our market study gives insights into overall marketplace activity, top domain sales and successful domain extensions. Sedo?s continued focus on innovations around our marketplace strategy resulted in a record number of 10,070 domain sales in Q4 and helped solidify our position as the most successful global marketplace for domains in the secondary market.
The 2009 Market Study shows Sedo?s strong growth in sales through our global platform in 2009, versus 2008. Sedo represented 64 percent of the top 100 public sales in the domain industry, with the next closest competitor coming in at 8 percent. This growth was also fueled by impressive quarter over quarter results, with a 5 percent increase in domain sales in Q4 of 2009. In addition, Sedo accounted for 11 of the top 20 biggest sales industry-wide, compared to only 5 of the top 20 sales in 2008. This included a surge in geographical and descriptive domains, including the sale of Fly.com for $1.6 million, Russia.com for $1.5 million, Call.com for $1.1 million, and Brazil.com for $500,000.
Which extensions are the most successful ones?
The study reveals that the .com extension continues to be the most popular generic top level domain (gTLD), accounting for 44 percent of all domain sales on the Sedo marketplace in 2009. In looking at its place among other gTLDs, the .com displays an even greater lead. The extension accounted for 72 percent of all Q4 2009 gTLD sales and 74 percent of 2009 gTLD sales. In contrast, the second most popular gTLD, the .net extension generated 11 percent of 2009 gTLD sales, and only 6 percent of all domains sold on the Sedo marketplace last year.
In terms of the best-performing extensions for average sales price, Sedo?s study saw the sharpest rise in .biz domains. This growth can be attributed in part to the growth in sales of one character .biz domains, which first became available through the .biz registrar in September 2009.
Fixed price names represent a strong growth sector of the market
We?ve seen a significant four percent growth in the number of fixed price domains changing hands in 2009, as compared with 2008. This figure will continue to grow this year, as domain owners apply fixed prices to appeal to more buyers.
What are the top selling categories?
The top selling domain categories of 2009 included software, employment, services, regions, country and cities, tobacco, insurance, three-character domains, hardware and casinos.

    <description>
ICANN meeting in Nairobi running well, report attendees.
With all of the hype around security and possible disruptions, those in attendance at ICANN&amp;#8217;s meeting in Nairobi say all is going well.
Attorney John Berryhill writes &amp;#8220;The summit and the ICANN meeting are both running smoothly here. The ?security issue? is waaaay overblown by those who simply didn?t want the meeting held in Kenya. The conference center is huge and in a secure block with Kenyan military around the perimeter&amp;#8230;&amp;#8221;
Berryhill surmises that it&amp;#8217;s probably safer than Philadelphia.
Berryhill sent this picture from the room of the conference center in Kenya. He said the buses enter a secure gate and then all guests go through a second perimeter. The conference center is huge, and there were no difficulties with the African leadership summit.

Reports on Twitter show that ICANN leadership is actually making progress on issues at this meeting, holding various groups accountable rather than letting them just delay progress.
Here&amp;#8217;s a picture of the Mount Kilimanjaro climbers arriving at the Nairobi conference:

Finally, a little humor for you. A celebrity guest interrupted the ICANN meeting today:

Notice the tattoo on Kayne West&amp;#8217;s forearm.
Thanks John for keeping us all up to date.

    <title>Happy 5th Birthday, Domain Name Wire</title>
    <description>
Domain Name Wire started publishing five years ago today.
On March 9, 2005, I wrote the first post on Domain Name Wire, reporting on the sale of Local.com for $700,000. 3,141 posts later, Domain Name Wire is running as strong as ever.
If you&amp;#8217;re reading this, I&amp;#8217;d like to thank you for making Domain Name Wire a premier news source for the domain industry. It&amp;#8217;s because of your readership that I commit my time reporting on and analyzing this exciting industry.
Of course, that&amp;#8217;s all possible thanks to DNW&amp;#8217;s many advertisers. Please take a moment to peruse the ads on this page. If you haven&amp;#8217;t visited any of the advertisers, please take a moment to do so.
A lot has changed in the past five years. Looking back at what I wrote in March 2005 is like a time capsule:
TrafficClub now open to public &amp;#8211; Moniker launched one of the first major &amp;#8220;traffic splitting&amp;#8221; systems for domain parking, which closed down after upstream providers limited the practice and Oversee.net eventually bought Moniker.
Go Daddy launches radio show &amp;#8211; Bob Parsons revved up the publicity act. I was later a guest on the show.
Yahoo to challenge Google Adsense &amp;#8211; &amp;#8220;Challenge&amp;#8221; was probably too strong of a word. Yahoo Publisher Network is still in beta, five years later.
MSN readies pay-per-click system &amp;#8211; Microsoft announced its Adcenter program. Fast forward to 2010, Adcenter will soon be the management platform for PPC ads on both Microsoft and Yahoo.
Thanks again for reading DNW over the past five years. If you haven&amp;#8217;t yet done so, please subscribe to the DNW RSS feed and follow it on Twitter.
Here&amp;#8217;s to the next five years.

Guagua.com hits six figures, Domaining.com owner scores nice sale.
Sedo has sold the domain name Guagua.com for $100,000. Guagua has a number of different meanings, including being the name of a language and a municipality in the Phillipines.
The company also helped broker the sale of Pepe.com for 45,000 EUR. It looks like Francois Carrillo of Domaining.com scored a nice flip on this domain name. He bought it at Bido.com a couple months ago for only $15,000, and then listed it for sale on his Mocus.com domain listing site. Sedo brought a buyer to the table, helping Carrillo score about four times his money in just a couple months.

    <title>Sex.com Domain Name In Default for Over a Year</title>
    <description>
Debtors behind on bills for the past year.
With Sex.com heading to the auction block, there&amp;#8217;s a been a lot of talk about what went wrong with the current owner, Escom LLC. According to a Reuters article, Escom has been in default on its loan for over a year to lender DOM Partners.
&amp;#8220;The loan was in default and DOM partners is foreclosing pursuant to its right under the security agreement,&amp;#8221; DOM&amp;#8217;s attorney Scott Matthews told Reuters.
The auction is still scheduled for March 18. Clearly, there are some disagreements amongst Escom LLC investors. There was early indication from one of the investors that there might be a lawsuit filed to block the auction, but a search of Federal District Court records did not turn up any such suit yet.
Auctioneer Maltz Auctions says there&amp;#8217;s been significant interest in the domain name. Prospective bidders need to deposit a $1 million check prior to the auction. There will definitely be bids in excess of $1 million, but any winning bid is subject to DOM Partners&amp;#8217; acceptance.

    <title>Nominet Considers Release of One and Two Letter Domains</title>
    <description>Following the course of other TLDs, such as .DE, Nominet has posted a document for their members and registrars proposing the release of single and double character domain names in the third level of the .UK domain (under co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk and .net.uk). The release would exclude some domains that have been registered before the establishing of Nominet as the registry operator in 1996. According to the consultation, Nominet is considering releasing the domains in two phases: A first round for trademark holders, followed by a Dutch Auction (starting with a high price being reduced until a buyer is found, similar to the release of second level .MX domains).
The corresponding consultation runs for three months, from 8 March 2010 until 8 June 2010.  To provide your feedback, you can either complete the online survey or email your answers to shortdomains@nominet.org.uk.

    <title>CheapTweet Upgrades Its Social Deals Search Engine</title>
    <description>CheapTweet.com, a major Twitter-based social deals search engine site, has launched CheapTweet Version 2, in celebration of indexing over 5 million deals online to offer users an better social shopping experience. CheapTweet&amp;#8217;s 2.0 rollout adds upgrades to its core search engine, voting mechanism, and a new look and feature called the DealStream that helps visitors find the right deal at exactly the right time.

CheapTweet has addressed a great need by harnessing the power of Twitter to help make consumer dollars stretch further. All day, CheapTweet indexes about 30,000 tweets about deals, filters out spam and duplicate content, and adds more than 10,000 new deals to the web site &amp;#8211; many of which are different one-of-a-kind deals from boutique sellers. Deals are then ranked by how much they are talked about on Twitter and CheapTweet user votes. With so many diverse deals pouring into the system in real-time, CheapTweet has developed the DealStream to help visitors find the ones that are right for them.
CheapTweet&amp;#8217;s DealStream is a real-time, personalized deals system where you can set up your own stream to track categories of deals, brands, merchants or keywords which are filtered and organized based on a relevance algorithm that takes into account your preferences and deal quality. Visitors can get these results on CheapTweet.com or via a convenient RSS feed.
As well as the DealStream, CheapTweet has recently made upgrades to its search engine, that uses particularized algorithms to combine tweets about the same deals, helping you speedily see what deals are hot, as well as sort through spam. There are also changes to the CheapTweet voting mechanism, allowing you to give deals a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Finally, CheapTweet clearly labels official accounts so shoppers know when they are looking at legitimate deals from a real merchant. Together these changes allow a clean but intelligent means to save money.
CheapTweet (www.CheapTweet.com) is a social deals search engine that scours Twitter to find any and all money-saving opportunities available to consumers. To date, CheapTweet has indexed more than 5 million deals from tens of thousands of sellers. CheapTweet is operated by Appozite (www.Appozite.com), an Austin, Texas-based startup developing social e-commerce software to connect unique and interesting retailers with customers. Appozite also makes TweetReach (www.tweetreach.com), a tool for measuring Twitter campaigns.

    <title>Surprising New Website Data Reveals Social Sharing and Traffic Trends</title>
    <description>
Innovative multimedia company, Tynt is working behind the scenes on over 400,000 sites including many well known media and news publications. Their service extends to over 200 million web users.
Tynt Insight technology is being used to track content sharing via copy &amp;amp; paste actions in a user&amp;#8217;s browser. According to the company, an average of 6% of page views on the web result in some kind of user action that can be tracked by their technology.
In a recent rebuttal towards TechCrunch&amp;#8217;s claim that 45% of all social sharing is done on Facebook, Tynt has shown clearly that this is not the case.

Email deserves the top spot for overall shares at 75%, Facebook accounts for 25%, blogs and forums (labeled &amp;#8220;Other&amp;#8221;) still account for a significant number of shares while Twitter is still growing with 1% of the social sharing action.

Tynt went on to provide a different and all-together more interesting break down of social sharing by showing how shares are performing in the chart above. Apparently Tynt Insight is tracking more than just copy/paste actions. This is valuable and definitely insightful click-through data!
Here are highlights I&amp;#8217;ve observed containing some very interesting data revealed by Tynt:

There are an estimated 1 trillion to 1.4 trillion page views on the web each month.
Slightly over 2% of all page views result in sharing via copy &amp;amp; paste actions, totaling 20 billion shares per month.
Sharing via built in share buttons (Digg this, Tweet this) account for only 400 million shares per month.
Email is used for 70% of all social sharing and accounts for 48% of new site traffic.
Blogs, forums and other mediums generate 36% of new site traffic despite accounting for only 4% of total shares.
While 25% of all sharing is done on Facebook it only generates 10% of new site traffic.
Digg generates 5% of new site traffic despite accounting for less than 1% of total shares.

What can we do to improve user experience and cater to the kind 2% of visitors who choose to share our content?
Website publications and blogs could definitely use more accessibility and unity with email sharing. We put an emphasis on social sharing and tend to leave email as a fall-back option when in fact it is being used the most.
Adding a prominent notice or automated form to share via email may do the trick and help tap into the prevalence of email sharing.
I&amp;#8217;m sure improvements and new applications, website widgets, and browser addons for both email and social network sharing will be coming soon throughout 2010.
Tynt&amp;#8217;s Insight software will automatically include a link back to the source page when text is copied from a website. I&amp;#8217;m still a little dumbfounded that they are tracking copy and paste data, why didn&amp;#8217;t someone think of this sooner?
I&amp;#8217;m interested to see what content is being copied from my sites, how often, and how I can use that information to generate more site traffic. If this sounds good to you as well, check out Tynt Insight&amp;#8217;s free service and leave a comment below with your thoughts.

    <title>ICA Requests Action on Czech Arbitration Court Policy Changes</title>
    <description>
Internet Commerce Association wants ICANN to act quickly on move by UDRP provider.
Internet Commerce Association counsel Philip Corwin has sent a letter (pdf) to ICANN CEO Rod Beckstrom and Chairman of the Board Peter Dengate-Thrush asking it to act on Czech Arbitration Court&amp;#8217;s new UDRP policy.
Czech Arbitration Court (CAC), one of the newest UDRP providers, proposed a new scheme in which it would charge only 500 EUR to file a domain name complaint and arbitrators would not spend as much time on cases.
ICANN held a public comment period on the proposal, in which all 15 comments were opposed to CAC&amp;#8217;s scheme. That includes comments from an existing arbitrator who questioned the basis for the proposal.
Counsel for CAC posted a comment on Domain Name Wire&amp;#8217;s earlier story on the proposal, stating that it would not move forward without ICANN&amp;#8217;s blessing. Instead, before getting final word from ICANN, CAC made a few changes to the proposal and announced it was going forward with our without ICANN&amp;#8217;s approval.
So far, ICANN has not made any public comment on CAC&amp;#8217;s move that I&amp;#8217;m aware of. It was briefly discussed in another context on the first day of ICANN&amp;#8217;s meeting in Nariobi.
Whether ICANN acts on CAC&amp;#8217;s move or not, it needs to say something.

    <title>Amazon.com Fires Colorado Affiliates Thanks to Affiliate Tax</title>
    <description>
Amazon says &amp;#8220;see you later&amp;#8221; to Colorado&amp;#8217;s affiliate merchants. Thank inept state representatives.
Colorado is the latest state to exacerbate unemployment problems by effectively canning its affiliate marketers.
Colorado has joined a list of states that either proposed or enacted rules that make web companies collect sale tax if they have affiliates operating in the state. In the case of Colorado, HB 10-1193 didn&amp;#8217;t necessarily require Amazon.com to collect sales tax. Instead, it upped the compliance burden on Amazon.com, making it just as costly.
As I&amp;#8217;ve pointed out before, such &amp;#8220;affiliate taxes&amp;#8221; actually lower a state&amp;#8217;s tax revenue. The e-commerce merchant usually cuts the state&amp;#8217;s affiliates rather than deal with the sales tax. So the state doesn&amp;#8217;t end up getting the sales tax. Also, it lowers the income of the state&amp;#8217;s affiliate marketers, lowering state income tax revenues.

    <title>John Mauldin on the Future of Technology</title>
    <description>
This weeks post from John is very non-financial, but it goes off on an interesting tangent analyzing technology opportunities of the future.
Here are some of the topics he covers and key quotes on each:
Nanoscale: &amp;#8220;Batteries made from carbon nanotubes hold tremendous promise for better storage (by 400 times less weight per watt output). Filtering  of seawater to produce fresh water, increased computer speed and power &amp;#8211; there is a long and rapidly growing list of nanoscale advances.&amp;#8221;
It is interesting how some of these topics overlap.  Nanoscale with the Water Purification he mentions, below.
Robots and the Mauldin Test (as opposed to the Turing Test): &amp;#8220;I proposed the Mauldin Test. When a computer tells us that it no longer wishes to program a smarter computer, we will have arrived at the point  of self-awareness and survival instinct. I suggest that is true AI.&amp;#8221;
I still think most robot technology is more of a gimmick than a goal.  Too much emphasis on designing for it&amp;#8217;s look (to be human) than for it&amp;#8217;s purpose.  Why is a robot being human the ultimate goal?  We already have plenty of humans.
Water Purification: &amp;#8220;Water may be my #1 concern about the future. It is an intractable problem and one that must be solved. There  is Microsoft- or Google-type wealth awaiting the team that creates an  inexpensive way to purify water. Water management will be a major issue in the  future. There are those who think we will go to war over oil or energy in the  future. I rather doubt it. Water rights are going to be the issue that will divide nations and peoples unless we can find new technologies to create cheap  supplies of fresh water and move it to where it is needed.&amp;#8221;
Totally on board with the importance of water.  Just wish I had more of a chemistry/marine biology/nanoscale background to be able to understand all of the issues better.
Biotech: &amp;#8220;The human genome project was launched in 1990. It cost $3 billion. At the time,  detractors said it was a waste of time, as it would take a thousand years &amp;#8211; and they  were right, if you assumed then-current technology. It actually took only 11  years (to 2001), as new technologies were constantly invented. Craig Venter  started Celera in 1998 and finished in a dead heat with the government for a  fraction of the cost, at around $300 million.  Where are we now? Ray  McCauley of Illumina told us of a machine they make that can do the entire human  genome in one week. The cost of the machine is $750,000.&amp;#8221;
As he mentions, I am totally willing to donate my DNA to be mapped publicly.
Steve Jurveston: &amp;#8220;Steve Jurvetson, the #1 most influential geek (according to Wired, I think) simply blew us away. I would  like to tie him to a chair for five hours and find out why he invested the  billions of dollars in the scores of companies he has helped launch. He is focusing  on clean tech, as is a lot of Silicon Valley. He sees 5,000 business plans a  year. He talks about how we are soon in for Perpetual Future Shock. There are 6  x 10 to the 21 microbes in the ocean. There are microbes that only exist in certain parts of the ocean. We have only begun to explore the  world. It is going to take a long time to switch to renewables. Maybe by 2030.  He is blown away by how many incredible ideas there are. This is a guy who did  his EE major at Stanford in 2.5 years and was #1 in his class. Intimidatingly  smart.&amp;#8221;
Never heard of this guy until now, but after reading and watching some of his stuff, I am his latest greatest fan.
Nuclear Power: &amp;#8220;Did you know that the nuclear waste we already have could power the US for centuries? The technology exists to use it, as France has done for a long time.&amp;#8221;
I am a big fan of nuclear power.  It is green technology that is only held back by a negative stigma from problems caused by technology from the 70&amp;#8217;s.  It is one movement where I hope Obama succeeds.
I like this quote from him to finish this all off:
&amp;#8220;In the future, the world will get turned on its head. Instead of 15 minutes of fame, you  will only get 15 minutes of anonymity.&amp;#8221;
He was referring to how biotech will allow us to identify everything about everyone, including everything they touch.  I like it in reference to the social media internet growth as well.

    <title>Domain Companies Head to Austin for SXSW</title>
    <description>
Domain companies en route to Austin later this week.
Several domain name companies are heading to Austin later this week for the start of the annual South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Festival. The Interactive portion of the event attracted over 10,000 attendees last year. Many stay in town for the music festival, which kicks off in the middle of next week. Although the interactive festival is big, music is a big draw: over 2,000 musical acts will play at 80 official venues next week, and many more unofficially.
So here&amp;#8217;s who I know will be in town for SXSW 2010:
DirectNIC &amp;#8211; domain registrar will have a booth at the Interactive trade show. Swing by booth 932 to say &amp;#8216;hi&amp;#8217;.
Name.com &amp;#8211; will be at the show
Demand Media &amp;#8211; the company has a big contingent in Austin, thanks to its acquisition of Pluck
Traverse Legal &amp;#8211; one of the attorneys at Traverse Legal, which handles a number of domain name cases, will be here
If you&amp;#8217;re with a domain name company and heading to Austin for SXSW, feel free to leave a comment.

    <title>Search Engine Optimization and Network Marketing: How to Get More Leads</title>
    <description>I had an interesting conversation over the weekend with Marvin, who called me to discuss Network Marketing. Somehow we had become connected through Facebook or another social networking website and he thought that since we were tagged as being friends online he believed that that gave him permission to call me and try to sell me something. That&amp;#8217;s a whole other blog post in itself, and a debate that could go on and on. My conversation with Marvin, a network marketer who is heavily involved in MLM (Multi Level Marketing) and network marketing, thought that he could sell me a domain name and website. Marvin and I talked about it, and I explained that buying a website wasn&amp;#8217;t my thing: that it in fact was not a way to &amp;#8220;get more leads&amp;#8221; by simply buying someone else&amp;#8217;s website content that they were selling. In fact, doing so is actually leaning towards search engine spam, and that simply copying someone else&amp;#8217;s content was a no-no.
This was an eye-opening experience for Marvin, someone who was trying to &amp;#8220;make a buck&amp;#8221; by trying to get me to sign up for the multi level marketing scheme that he was involved in, something called &amp;#8220;Global Domains International&amp;#8221;. In fact, we talked about the fact that it was better to create a unique website, perhaps a blog, with unique content on it rather than using someone else&amp;#8217;s templated content that&amp;#8217;s duplicated over 128,000 times on the internet:

You see, if you are a network marketer, you probably have been &amp;#8220;given free a website&amp;#8221; where you can drive &amp;#8220;leads&amp;#8221; to and get people to sign up to run their own free business. In other words, your website would be a lead generation tool, whereas the network marketing company is &amp;#8220;giving you&amp;#8221; a free website. Most likely, you&amp;#8217;re doing all the work and getting others to sign up for this &amp;#8220;opportunity&amp;#8221; for them to make more money. But is that what you are really doing? Are you actually in business for yourself, living the &amp;#8220;American Dream&amp;#8221; so to speak, and actually making money for yourself? Probably not. You&amp;#8217;re making some money, but you&amp;#8217;re also making money for someone else (the network marketing company and those who are situated &amp;#8220;above you&amp;#8221; in this whole multi level marketing &amp;#8220;program&amp;#8221;).
I&amp;#8217;m not going to go off on a tangent here and talk about one particular Multi Level Marketing (MLM) opportunity or even several of them. My whole point of this blog post is actually to talk about what these MLMs tend to do: give out free websites. This is easy for the MLM company to do, to set up literally thousands of websites, the same websites over and over again, the same content. But perhaps a different name, the name of the individual who has &amp;#8220;bought&amp;#8221; the website. In other words, it&amp;#8217;s duplicate content.
Duplicate content on the internet is spam, plain and simple. The search engines don&amp;#8217;t want it, and people don&amp;#8217;t want it.
By using the same duplicate content and duplicate websites, over and over again, you&amp;#8217;re not doing yourself a favor. In fact, it&amp;#8217;s actually hurting your chances of bring in more targeted leads. One way that a business can bring in more targeted leads is via the internet search engines. In fact, when you are looking for something in particular (perhaps &amp;#8220;making money at home or some other keyword phrase), we go to the search engines like Google.com and search for it. The search engines are interested in giving us, the searchers, the best search engine results. What would happen if they gave you a list of websites that are exactly the same, over and over again? You wouldn&amp;#8217;t be very happy with that search engine, and you would probably go somewhere else, another search engine.
That&amp;#8217;s what the search engines want: they want to give us the very best search engine experience. So, one way that Google does that is they remove all the duplicate web pages: if you&amp;#8217;re a search engine optimization expert like myself, then you have probably heard the phrase &amp;#8220;duplicate content&amp;#8221;: which is not something that you want to be involved with. If you have duplicate content on your website or if the content is already indexed on the web, then it&amp;#8217;s not going to rank well in the search engines: or it might not even be indexed at all by Google. And some people actually think that you&amp;#8217;re penalized for it.
So, what can you do if you are a network marketer and want to bring in more network marketing leads? What if you have already spent money on a multi level marketing &amp;#8220;program&amp;#8221; and want to get more people in your network? The best thing you can do is go out and buy a domain name (they cost about $10 to register) and set up a website for yourself (or a blog). Start promoting yourself and start promoting your name. Start posting (blogging) or writing about your multi level marketing experience. Write every day if possible. Keep your website up to date. Learn a little bit about search engine optimization, if you can. Work on getting links to your website. Not to the actual landing page of your own &amp;#8220;free website&amp;#8221; that the multi level marketing organization gave you, but to YOUR website, to your blog. Start building your own list of followers, people who like to receive information from you, not from the multi level marketing company that you&amp;#8217;re involved with this month. Put your time into keeping your own website, your own blog up to date. And even if your ultimate goal is to drive more leads to the multi level marketing program that you&amp;#8217;re pitching, your search engine optimization efforts of promoting yourself and your own blog will help you more in the long run. In fact, if you ever switch gears at some point and start something with another multi level marketing or network marketing program, it will be a lot easier for you to change gears and start talking to your followers: those who are on your own mailing list.
If you&amp;#8217;ve taken the time to set up your own website or blog, and you are linking and sending your followers on the social networking websites to your own blog, then your blog can link over to whatever opportunity you are involved in right now. By using search engine optimization techniques and by updating your website with unique content on a regular basis, you will end up bringing in more leads than you could ever imagine.

    <title>WWW Prefix Typo Popular Among Trademark Infringers</title>
    <description>
Study says WWW typo is most common prefix in trademark infringing domain names.
A new study from Corporation Service Company (CSC) &amp;#8212; which provides trademark protection services &amp;#8212; shows that www is the most common prefix to brand names used to &amp;#8220;trademark infringers&amp;#8221; in domain names. (The very common typo where someone forgets the dot between www and the domain name.)
Perhaps more interesting is that most companies that do own the www typo of their web site don&amp;#8217;t actually forward it to their main web site. 67% of the www typos owned by the actual web site owner didn&amp;#8217;t point to any active web site. 80% of the www typos owned by someone other than the web site owner pointed to pay-per-click pages.
CSC says the www typo of its own web site gets about 1% of the traffic of its web site.
CSC determined that the most common suffix added to trademarks is &amp;#8220;online&amp;#8221;. Surprisingly, the common &amp;#8220;com&amp;#8221; typo where someone forgets to enter a dot between the second level domain and &amp;#8216;com&amp;#8217; is only ranked #5.
The study looked at 100 randomly selected brands as well as all filed UDRP cases.

    <title>ICANN Chair: May be ?Ready to Move? on Uniform Rapid Suspension</title>
    <description>
ICANN session on trademark protection suggests URS is close to being finalized.
Of all of the trademark protections being discussed for the launch of new top level domain names, it looks like Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS) may be the closest to being approved. Uniform Rapid Suspension is a sort of &amp;#8220;light UDRP&amp;#8221; for domain names deemed to be clear cut cases of cybersquatting.
During the first day of sessions at ICANN&amp;#8217;s Nairobi meeting, ICANN Chairman of the Board Peter Tengate-Thrush commented that the URS proposal may be close to approval:
I just wanted to warn the community that there&amp;#8217;s a real danger of this mechanism actually having been agreed and the board voting on it and us moving on.
The silence that was the response to Mary&amp;#8217;s outline and the fact that Robin can only find one quibble, which she then provided the answer to, suggests that we really are getting close on this one. And I think the evidence of compromise that&amp;#8217;s all over there is another great sign.
So just a warning. We may actually be ready to move on this one.
In other words, speak now or forever hold your peace.
Although there wasn&amp;#8217;t much debate at the ICANN meeting on URS, there&amp;#8217;s still an open comment period on the topic.
As it stands, URS has been greatly watered down from the original proposal. A complainant doesn&amp;#8217;t get rights to a domain name won through URS, it merely gets suspended. Which means that, once it expires, someone else will register it. (There was some discussion during the session of giving priority rights to the complainant upon expiration of the domain name. If this is added, it would basically make URS into a cheap UDRP with delayed gratification.)
Also during the discussion on URS, the issue of UDRP providers offering their own similar forms of URS came up. Czech Arbitration Court is offering a watered down version of UDRP starting March 15 (something ICANN still hasn&amp;#8217;t commented on). WIPO also has plans, but they seem to still be in the exploration phase.
A person identified as &amp;#8220;Brian from WIPO&amp;#8221; in the ICANN session transcript stated:
It&amp;#8217;s true we have been exploring ways to further expedite and make more cost-efficient the UDRP within the existing framework based on the ability to address issues such as word limits and fees in the supplemental rules. And we very much think it&amp;#8217;s an open question, and I agree you with there that there are questions regarding the scope of interoperability between any URS and any efficiency gains that can be made within the UDRP process.

    <title>Reevaluating New Top Level Domain Names</title>
    <description>
A look back at my position on new TLDs, 9 months later.
Last May I wrote an editorial titled &amp;#8220;Why I&amp;#8217;m opposed to new top level domains&amp;#8221;. I outlined six reasons that I didn&amp;#8217;t like the current proposal for new top level domain names.
Nine months later, I still have many of those same concerns. But I&amp;#8217;m also looking forward to the introduction of new top level domain names. Look, everyone who&amp;#8217;s pushing for new TLDs is in it for the money. And there&amp;#8217;s money to be made, so rather than just fight it I&amp;#8217;m also looking at how to play the game to my benefit. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that several large domain investors plan to launch new TLDs.
So let&amp;#8217;s take another look at the six concerns I wrote about last May.
1. Consumer confusion will lead to an unsafe internet. It&amp;#8217;s a given that new TLDs will create confusion for the typical web user. Just ask Michael Berkens. But the concern about it leading to an unsafe internet is probably not rational, given that the typical web user already gets duped by plenty of scams. The marginal effect of adding new TLDs is probably low.
2. ICANN will lose its path. This is still a concern for me. But at least now ICANN has a quality leader.
3. Politics will play a bigger role in the Net. In the nine months since I wrote the original piece, it has become more and more clear that this is a big issue. Governments are staking their claim and trying to get the leg up on new TLDs while pushing their view of what should be allowed on the web.
4. Registries will fail, leaving customers in a lurch. Yes, this will happen. And ICANN will get egg on its face after the first few fail and it works out kinks in its registry failover plan.
5. Large registrars will become too powerful, harming competition. This is still an issue, but it doesn&amp;#8217;t really affect most of us. The registries have the most to lose here.
6. Fundamental changes to domain name regulation will be pushed through without proper controls. This remains one of the biggest problems with new TLDs. It&amp;#8217;s not the concept itself, it&amp;#8217;s how things are being done. No longer is the goal of a registry to offer the lowest priced, best service to customers. No longer will we have a &amp;#8220;uniform&amp;#8221; dispute resolution policy. These changes are being hammered through in an effort to get new TLDs out the door.
To summarize, I still have grave concerns about what is being &amp;#8220;packaged&amp;#8221; with new TLDs and the possible damage it could do to the web. But I also don&amp;#8217;t want to sit back and let opportunity pass by.
Now, I&amp;#8217;m not going to be one of those people that ignores the downside to introducing new TLDs. There are plenty, and I&amp;#8217;ll continue to point them out. After all, it makes for compelling copy.

    <title>Karibu Mobile People!</title>
    <description>The 37th ICANN Meeting officially opened this morning at the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi. Despite all the fears and discussions about security, Kenya has proven to be a beautiful and very hospital country for the people that traveled here to attend the meeting in person. When they say &amp;quot;Karibu!&amp;quot; (&amp;quot;Welcome!&amp;quot; in Swahili), Kenyans definitely do mean it from the bottom of their heart.dotMobi has once again put together a mobile site at http://icann.mobi which we hope will help attendees keep themselves more easily on top of things in Nairobi, and really make the best out of this great opportunity.The site is built and maintained in partnership with our friends at mobiManage, who we wish to thank once again for the amazing support they provide us with this project.As usual, we appreciate the comments and suggestions of the community to keep improving the site for the future.Beyond the interesting discussions around key industry topics like new TLDs and IDNs, being in a country like Kenya has a special meaning for me as a member of the dotMobi team. It is here that mobile technologies have overwhelmingly proven their disruptive power and contributed significantly to improve people&amp;#39;s living conditions and stimulate new services and businesses. Kenya has for instance been a pioneer in effective mobile payment and money transfers systems, something with which Europe and North America have ironically been struggling with for years with very poor results. I hope this meeting will give me the chance to learn more about Mobile web in Africa and gather useful inspiration to keep promoting the dotMobi message to the rest of the world.To the whole ICANN community, dotMobi wishes all the best for a very fruitful meeting!p.s. don&amp;#39;t forget to check out our special icann.mobi flier here ;)</description>
