    <title>Blocking Farmville on Facebook</title>
    <description>I recently posted a comment on my Facebook wall about blocking those annoying Farmville posts that seem to frequently appear on my wall, and judging by the messages sent by friends on and off Facebook, I thought I would share how I did it in case you don&amp;#8217;t know.
When someone posts something (whether it&amp;#8217;s Farmville, a Facebook game, comment, or other Facebook app), if you hover over the upper right side of their post, a &amp;#8220;hide&amp;#8221; button appears. When you click the hide button, it gives the option to hide the person or the app they used. When I clicked the comment related to Farmville, it allowed me to block all Farmville comments from anyone that uses it.
Another friend pointed out that if you want to unhide a friend that you hid previously, go to the bottom of your wall feed and click on the edit options button.
I know this isn&amp;#8217;t related to domain names, but I am sure there are plenty of people who would like this information. I am glad I learned how to do this, otherwise the next step would be to block these people.

    <title>WristletPurses.com Vs. WristletPurse.com</title>
    <description>I was bidding on two domain names this week on Snapnames &amp;#8211; WristletPurses.com Vs. WristletPurse.com.  Both domain names had relatively little bidding until the final day. WristletPurse.com ended a couple of days ago and WristletPurses.com ended today.
Neither domain name was especially interesting to me, but it&amp;#8217;s a product (and a plural) so I figured they&amp;#8217;d probably be worth a couple hundred dollars or more to someone.  I locked in both bids, and I wasn&amp;#8217;t surprised when I was outbid on WristletPurse.com. I was very surprised when I saw the final price was $1,450.
With the singular auction done, I figured I didn&amp;#8217;t have a chance at the plural, so I left for the airport without even looking at my Snapnames account. I logged onto the Wifi network on Delta, and I was even more surprised to see that I was the winning bidder on WristletPurses.com for under $100.
Doing some quick research, here&amp;#8217;s a brief comparison of the two terms:
Wristlet Purse &amp;#8211; 33,600 Google results (lots of advertisers)
Wristlet Purses &amp;#8211; 40,300 Google results (lots of advertisers)
Wristlet Purse &amp;#8211; 3,300 Google exact match monthly searches (US)
Wristlet Purses &amp;#8211; 720 Google exact match monthly searches (US)
Clearly, people are searching more for the singular but in my opinion, it doesn&amp;#8217;t really justify such a huge price differential. When I see a name sell for over $1,000, I know there has to be a pretty good reason. However, I don&amp;#8217;t understand the reason for such disparity between the two domain names.
What are your thoughts on the price differential for these domain names?

    <title>Poll: How Long Until New Top Level Domain Names?</title>
    <description>
When do you think new TLDs will be available for registration?
Another ICANN meeting has wrapped up. Blows were dealt to many, but some progress was made. With EOI off the table, the focus is on settling the &amp;#8220;overarching issues&amp;#8221;. The intellectual property constituency, which didn&amp;#8217;t show up to Nairobi, was perhaps the biggest winner.
New TLDs are going to happen. It&amp;#8217;s a matter of when.
During Domainer Mardi Gras, I asked my panel when they thought new TLDs would actually be available. More specifically, when will be I be able to go to a domain name registrar and register a new domain name and start using it?
The earliest estimate was April 2011, with the latest September 2012. With the latest information coming out of Nairobi, when do you think the first new TLD will become available for registration?
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

    <title>ICANN Board Drops Bomb on Registrars Hoping to Launch New TLDs</title>
    <description>
Board opts for separation of registrars and registries for new top level domain names.
ICANN&amp;#8217;s board resolved today that there will be &amp;#8220;strict separation of entities offering registry services and those acting as registrars.  No co-ownership will be allowed.&amp;#8221;
However, the board left the possibility open for compromise, stating that if the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) comes up with a compromise, it will consider it.
This is bad news for companies such as Demand Media, which owns registrar eNom and hoped to apply for new top level domain names. It&amp;#8217;s good news for incumbent registries VeriSign, Neustar, and Afilias.
The issue of registry/registrar separation has been a hot topic since the start of discussions on new top level domain names. The separation of the .com registry from the registrar business opened the door to massive registrar competition. Without it, it&amp;#8217;s fair to wonder if behemoths such as Go Daddy, eNom, and Tucows would be around today.
But proponents of allowing integration &amp;#8212; including some of these very same registrars that benefited to separation the first time around &amp;#8212; argue that was a different time with a different set of circumstances.
Practically speaking, I don&amp;#8217;t think prohibiting registrars from being registries will make that much of a difference in new TLDs. It will just create a headache for registrars as they create separate legal and financial structures to side step the prohibition.

    <title>55 Handpicked Expired Domains Available For Registration</title>
    <description>
As always, these are quality two-word .COM domains that have recently expired and are currently available for registration. The previous list published on DotSauce had a record breaking 95% registration rate. Each name on this list has been hand selected for development and resale potential.
Here is a complete snapshot preview of the entire list and a glimpse at the automated appraisal and detailed statistics provided by Estibot.

As you can see there is alot of potential here! Notice one domain has a $17.20 average CPC, that is not a typo. Some of the lower Estibot valued domains are excellent candidates for branding, development, resale and are potentially more valuable than those found higher on the list.
I am offering exclusive access to this list for just $14.99 to a total of 5 people. First come, first serve. Please use the shopping cart widget below to purchase access.
An instant download (CSV spreadsheet file) will be provided which can be opened in Excel or Google Docs.
When 5 individuals have purchased access, the list will no longer be available to download. Thank you for your interest! If you have any questions or suggestions please leave a comment below.

    <title>ICANN Delays .XXX (Again)</title>
    <description>
.XXX decision pushed until next ICANN meeting.
Should we really be so surprised?
ICANN&amp;#8217;s board has decided not to act on the independent review of its decision to deny ICM Registry the .xxx top level domain name. Until further comment.
Insert joke about delayed sexual gratification here.
ICANN has punted. &amp;#8220;Let&amp;#8217;s think about this some more&amp;#8221; is the message, a message that ICANN has sent for years on a variety of topics.
The ICANN board originally authorized entering into a contract with ICM registry to launch .xxx in the last sTLD round. After getting pressure from a number of groups including governments, ICANN&amp;#8217;s board later voted to nix .xxx. ICM registry used ICANN&amp;#8217;s so-called independent review process to question ICANN&amp;#8217;s reversal. That independent review group said ICANN violated its bylaws when it reneged on .xxx.
But here&amp;#8217;s the catch. The independent review board merely makes a decision that the ICANN board can decide what to do with.
To be clear, it didn&amp;#8217;t kill .xxx.  It merely resolved &amp;#8220;create a transparent set of process options which can be published for public comment&amp;#8221;.  It is directing ICANN&amp;#8217;s CEO and general counsel to &amp;#8220;finalize a report of possible process options for further consideration.&amp;#8221;
ICANN&amp;#8217;s board will take into consideration the options and public comments at the June meeting in Brussels.
My guess is ICANN eventually approves ICM registry to run .xxx. Frankly, it should strip all of the &amp;#8220;policy&amp;#8221; elements of the original .xxx contract and just make it a traditional TLD agreement. But ICANN is scared to make a decision prior to the launch of new TLDs, since it will surely set off a firestorm of people opposed to .xxx and other similar TLDs coming to the net when new gTLDs are launched. Perhaps it will &amp;#8220;buy off&amp;#8221; ICM registry to wait until the new TLD launch.

    <title>Shocker: ICANN Nixes Expressions of Interest for New TLDs</title>
    <description>
No Expressions of Interest for new top level domain names.
I guess I&amp;#8217;m not in the internal loop at ICANN, but I&amp;#8217;m surprised that its board voted to completely nix the idea of &amp;#8220;Expressions of Interest&amp;#8221; for new top level domain names.
The idea was simple. If you want to apply for a new top level domain name, you would make a $55,000 deposit per TLD and name the string.
This would resolve a whole host of issues. First, we&amp;#8217;d know how many TLDs will be applied for when the new TLD application process starts. This could resolve issues with root zone scaling, assuage trademark interest fears (or at least let them know what they&amp;#8217;re dealing with), and uncover possible conflicts and issues that will rear their heads when the application process starts (and it&amp;#8217;s too late to do anything about it).
But ICANN&amp;#8217;s board decided the costs of running the EOI were outweighed by the costs of a potential delay to new gTLDs by using resources for EOI, not knowing the date the overarching issues for new TLDs will be resolved, and difficulty synchronizing the new TLD progress with the EOI process. So ICANN wants to focus staff resources on resolving remaining new TLD issues rather than doing the EOI.
Practically speaking, this means we&amp;#8217;ll go into the new TLD process blind. We&amp;#8217;ll have no idea how many TLDs will be applied for. We&amp;#8217;ll have to resolve root zone scaling for the prospect of 100 TLDs or 10,000 TLDs. We won&amp;#8217;t understand potential string conflicts and gaming until its too late.
That&amp;#8217;s unfortunate.
Yes, there are issues with the proposed EOI. But it seems to me that the benefits of EOI outweighed the costs.

    <title>ICANN Board Drops Bomb on Registrars Hoping to Launching New TLDs</title>
    <description>
Board opts for separation of registrars and registries for new top level domain names.
ICANN&amp;#8217;s board resolved today that there will be &amp;#8220;strict separation of entities offering registry services and those acting as registrars.  No co-ownership will be allowed.&amp;#8221;

    <title>Sex.com Sale To Be a No Reserve Auction</title>
    <description>As I previously reported, Sex.com will be up for auction at the law offices of Windels Marx Lane &amp;amp; Mittendorf, LLP, 156 West 56th Street, New York, New York on March 18, 2010 at 11 am. The auction is a result of a foreclosure, a few years after the 2006 sale, which was reported (but never confirmed) to be in the ballpark of $14 million.
At the time of my initial article, neither the auction house nor the law firm representing the lender would confirm the opening price/minimum bid for the auction, although it was stated that a $1,000,000 certified check would be required to bid.
I was just informed by Richard Maltz of Maltz Auctions that there will be no reserve price for the Sex.com auction. Registered bidders will be permitted to bid online or in person at the Windels Marx Lane &amp;amp; Mittendorf, LLP offices. In addition, Maltz added, &amp;#8220;the secured party does reserve the right to bid under the law.&amp;#8221;
Without a reserve price set, I would expect several bidders to participate in this landmark auction. Full auction details, including the terms and conditions (pdf) of the auction are available on the Maltz Auctions website.

    <title>Company Sends Press Release After Buying $1,088 Domain Name</title>
    <description>
Company brings new meaning to &amp;#8220;pumping&amp;#8221;.
I&amp;#8217;m not sure what it&amp;#8217;s like being a company traded on the pink sheets. But a lot of them try to do whatever they can to hype themselves.
Today The Amergence Group (PINKSHEETS: AMNG) sent out a press release titled &amp;#8220;Amergence Group Successfully Bids on and Acquires PanPacific International Domain Name.&amp;#8221;  The company bought PanPacificInternational.com from BuyDomains &amp;#8220;in concert with its venture partner, PanPacific Business, Inc.&amp;#8221;
I know what you&amp;#8217;re thinking. That doesn&amp;#8217;t seem like premium domain, or anything important enough to send out a press release. But when you read &amp;#8220;bids on and Acquires&amp;#8221; and &amp;#8220;with its venture partner&amp;#8221;, you&amp;#8217;re thinking there must be some serious money involved here.
$1,088.
Yep, that appears to be the &amp;#8220;buy now&amp;#8221; price that The Amergence Group paid BuyDomains to acquire the domain name. A listing for the domain is still on Sedo with that price.
&amp;#8220;Bid&amp;#8221; might be a strong term for &amp;#8220;made an offer&amp;#8221; or &amp;#8220;clicked the buy now button&amp;#8221;.
But I suppose if The Amergence Group was trying to get some visibility from this, I just gave them some. Now if only they updated the web site at the domain from BuyDomain&amp;#8217;s content page to something relevant prior to sending out the press release.

    <title>Stay in School and Keep Your Job</title>
    <description>Stay in school, kids. It makes it much easier to keep your job during recessions.

What I find interesting is comparing the 2001 recession to the recent recession. In 2001, it looks like the unemployment rate for those with a bachelor&amp;#8217;s degree stopped increasing right at the end of the recession. In the meantime, the other levels continued to rise for another 18 months.
During the current recession, the bachelor&amp;#8217;s degree unemployment is continuing to rise, while we&amp;#8217;ve seen a halt of some sort (albeit potentially temporary) in the rest of the education levels.

    <title>Domain Name Whois Privacy Has Its Limits</title>
    <description>
Complete anonymity isn&amp;#8217;t guaranteed with whois privacy services.
Using a whois privacy or proxy service to register and set up a gripe site? Or perhaps some other web site or domain you don&amp;#8217;t want attached to your name? Be prepared for the potential that your information will be disclosed.
There are two types of whois security services: privacy and proxy. A privacy service generally shows your name but includes a service&amp;#8217;s address, phone, and email. With a proxy service, the service usually registers the domain name on your behalf and then licenses the use of the domain to you. The preliminary results of a whois privacy study released last year (pdf) show that as many as 25% of domain names use some sort of whois identity protection service.
When someone files a complaint, be it law enforcement or a UDRP, the proxy service doesn&amp;#8217;t want to be stuck holding the bag.
Consider the most popular service, Go Daddy Group&amp;#8217;s Domains by Proxy (DBP). If someone files a UDRP against a domain name that uses DBP, the service changes the whois to reflect the owner&amp;#8217;s true identity. Kelly Lewis, Deputy General Counsel for Domains by Proxy, explained to Domain Name Wire:
DBP provides privacy services for millions of domain names, and it takes the protection of its customers&amp;#8217; information very seriously. As a proxy service, DBP substitutes its name and contact information in the whois database in place of the customer&amp;#8217;s information, thereby providing privacy. In disputes under the UDRP, however, the registrar is required to provide a verification of the registrant and the registrant&amp;#8217;s contact information. This allows the customer to defend his or her interest in the domain name. Before the registrar can make that verification, it is necessary that the privacy services be temporarily terminated so that the verification process can be completed and dispute resolved. If the customer prevails in the UDRP proceeding, the customer can then have privacy services reinstated.
Of course, if you signed up for the proxy service to protect your identity, all another party needs to do is file a UDRP to unmask it. Sometimes the respondent prevails. If the respondent wins, DBP will reinstate the whois proxy information at no charge upon request. But the information has already been disclosed.
Many, but not all, proxy services provide contact information to UDRP providers upon the filing of a case. Registrants should be aware of what proxy and privacy services are as well as their limitations.
And remember, nothing is completely anonymous.

    <title>Domain Registration Contest: Win $150!</title>
    <description>
IDN Tools and ElliotsBlog.com are co-sponsoring a IDN domain contest beginning today and ending in two weeks from today. All you have to do to win is register the IDN domain name with the highest footprint (explained below) and you will win $150. The second place winner will receive $100, and the third place winner will receive $50.
The domain&amp;#8217;s footprint = average CPC x Google exact match search term (as determined by Google Adwords Keyword Tool as of 9 a.m. on the contest end date). Here is an example of how the highest footprint will be determined: ???.com (Free.com in Thai).  The global monthly search volume is 7,480,000 x $0.43 (CPC) = 3,216,400 (footprint).
Here are the contest rules:

All submissions are FREE
Submissions must be made in the comments section of this post announcing the contest

    <title>MobilePhones.co.uk Tops $60,000, Auction Ends Today</title>
    <description>
Big UK domain name to sell later today.
An auction for MobilePhones.co.uk ends today on Sedo at 6:31 PM EST. The domain name has attracted 6 bidders and 18 bids, pushing the price up to 40,500 GBP &amp;#8212; roughly $60,000 USD.
Another sale in the works at Sedo is the web site and domain name Species.com. Sedo listed this in a Great Domains auction and it did not sell. A later bid of $37,500 was received, and the domain name is now in auction, closing in two days. It has one bidder.
Look for some potentially big travel and geo domain name sales soon, as Sedo&amp;#8217;s travel auction ends Friday.
The top bid so far is $75,000 for Belgium.com, but that is still well short of its reserve of $250,000-$500,000. Osaka.com is up to $60,000 but its reserve is at least $100,000. So far the highest domain in the auction to meet its reserve is giappone.it, a highly trafficked name that is up to 6,000 EUR.

    <title>Updates from Domain Name Wire</title>
    <description>
6 updates from Domain Name Wire.
Here are six quick updates. Four are related to domain names; the other two aren&amp;#8217;t but are worth checking out.
On-Topic
1. I have updated the DNW disclosures page. It describes my role in the domain name industry as it is relevant to the site. Please read it.
2. If you have any three character .com or .net domain names and are interested in auctioning them off, please contact me directly at editor (at) domainnamewire.com.
3. Many thanks for the congratulatory notes on Domain Name Wire celebrating five years. It means a lot to me.
4. I have two ad positions available right now: one of spot six and the newsletter ads.
Off-Topic
5. If you are in college or have a kid planning for college (or in college now), check out my friend&amp;#8217;s company MyEdu. They just picked up $5.5 million in investment from Bain Capital. It&amp;#8217;s a great service.
6. If you manage anyone in Gen Y (primarily 20-somethings), please check out my friend&amp;#8217;s new book Y Size Your Business. It&amp;#8217;s really a must read for anyone that works with this generation.

    <title>American Express Wants .Me Domain, Samsung Goes After ccTLDs</title>
    <description>
American Express gets into .me UDRP game, Samsung starts collecting ccTLDs.
American Express has joined a list of companies to use domain name arbitration to get their .me domain names. The company filed a complaint with WIPO for AmericanExpress.me, which is owned by a New Jersey resident. The domain currently has a GoDaddy parking page. First ad? &amp;#8220;American Express® Cards&amp;#8221;.
Other companies/brands to get their corresponding .me domain names through UDRP include Overstock, Mozilla, Firefox, ExxonMobil, Sprite, and Porsche.
In other UDRP news, Samsung is starting to get results from a slew of UDRPs it filed for country code domain names a couple months ago. So far it has picked up Samsung.cd (Congo), Samsung.la (Laos), and Samsung.md (Moldova). It has cases pending for Samsung.nu, .nu, .as, .com.ve, .bz, and .tm.
