    <title>Domain Hack DealsPl.us Loses Case for DealsPlus.com</title>
    <description>Company tries to get &amp;#8220;proper&amp;#8221; version of its domain through UDRP but fails.
I&amp;#8217;ve argued many, many times that you shouldn&amp;#8217;t create a web site at a &amp;#8220;domain hack&amp;#8221;, where the top level domain name is part of the keywords. Here&amp;#8217;s just another example, courtesy of a decision at World Intellectual Property Organization.
Sazze, Inc, which operates DealsPl.us, has lost a case brought against the owner of DealsPlus.com.
DealsPl.us is a big web site, getting well over a million unique visits per month according to Compete. But imagine trying to tell someone to go to the actual web site:
&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s DealsPlus.  That&amp;#8217;s deals-p-l-dot-u-s.&amp;#8221;
That doesn&amp;#8217;t work well.
So DealsPl.us filed a UDRP to get the better domain name DealsPlus.com. A three person panel found that the domain name wasn&amp;#8217;t registered and used in bad faith.
Like just about every site on a domain hack that has become popular, I bet Sazze wishes it would have done things right from the beginning.

    <description>This video will resonate with a lot of domainers.
If you&amp;#8217;re a domainer, you&amp;#8217;re probably an entrepreneur. Maybe not a full time entrepreneur, but at least you take your future into your own hands.
Which is why I think you&amp;#8217;ll appreciate this video from Cameron Herold speaking at a TEDxEdmonton. A warning: it&amp;#8217;s 20 minutes long, so watch it when you want to take a break. But watch the whole thing, including the video at the end from Grasshopper.com.
I&amp;#8217;ve been an entrepreneur since I could talk. Yet I feel that the American school system largely failed me. I did well, and even graduated college with a 4.0. But most of what I learned was wrote memorization with little practical use. It&amp;#8217;s something I think about every day, especially with my daughter heading to kindergarten in a year.
Enjoy.

    <description>Publicly traded Quinstreet acquires Insurance.com.
Lead generation company QuinStreet has purchased the Insurance.com web site and domain name.
A notice on Insurance.com states &amp;#8220;Insurance.com has changed ownership. Click here to review our updated privacy policy.&amp;#8221; The privacy policy notes that site is owned by Quinstreet.
I called a phone representative at Insurance.com who said the company was acquired &amp;#8220;a couple days ago&amp;#8221;. I am awaiting a response from Quinstreet with further details.
This was surely an expensive acquisition, but I can&amp;#8217;t find information about it in any of Quinstreet&amp;#8217;s SEC filings.
Last year QuinStreet purchased the Insure.com web site for $16 million. It then filed to go public on the NASDAQ, and now has a market capitalization of about $550 million.
Compete.com estimates that Insurance.com receives 325,000 visits per month.

    <title>Rick Schwartz Floating TRAFFIC Without Sponsors Idea</title>
    <description>I received an email from Rick Schwartz this morning with the subject, &amp;#8220;BIG News from T.R.A.F.F.I.C.&amp;#8221; and I immediately read the email.  Rick and Howard are expecting a big show in Florida in October (I am not surprised about this), and they are already discussing the format of TRAFFIC in 2011.
According to Rick&amp;#8217;s email.
&amp;#8220;In 2011, T.R.A.F.F.I.C. is strongly considering the possibility of having a &amp;#8220;Non Sponsored&amp;#8221; event. That means NO SPONSORS! Domainers only. The purpose is to keep the advertising and commercial part out and the ideas in.&amp;#8221;
First off, I dig the idea of the more relaxed conference. I&amp;#8217;ve hosted a few get togethers in New York, and because the crowd is made up of from anywhere between 15-35 people, it&amp;#8217;s very relaxed and cordial. We haven&amp;#8217;t had many sponsors for the events and that is usually intentional.
I think there will be a few big issues with doing a non sponsored event and I hope it doesn&amp;#8217;t happen.
Most companies will still send representatives to meet with clients who attend the show. Right there, the idea of a non-commercial event is kind of thrown out the window. Even if Rick and Howard would try to limit the event to domainers and exclude larger companies, that would prove to be a difficult challenge in and of itself since many domain investors have become providers of some sort.
If sponsors are let in without booths and/or event sponsorships, it&amp;#8217;s still going to be commercial, except sponsorship revenue won&amp;#8217;t be there. This brings me to my next point. TRAFFIC is already known as the most expensive domain conference. The current rate for South Beach is $1,295, which is double what DomainFest costs. Without sponsors to defray some of the costs, I can only imagine the price increasing. Nearly every company is either facing cutbacks or not spending more, and a price increase or a smaller conference would probably keep attendance very low, which in turn would dissuade fence sitters from attending.
One of the reasons I think DomainFest has been so successful is that domain investors want to meet with their account representatives face to face at least once a year. Oversee has very long tentacles when it comes to the domain space, and they have thousands of clients in their lines of business. Having a personal relationship with certain account representatives is very important in a business like this, and attending DomainFest is that opportunity to meet with account reps in addition to other domain investors. Without the commercial sponsorships, it&amp;#8217;s one less reason to attend.
I realize that many people who have been in this business for a while remember DeanFest (the first real conference), and most would relish the opportunity to relive that experience. Unfortunately, this business has grown so much over the years that reclaiming the old days is as likely as going to a college reunion hoping to relive the college experience of staying out drinking until 4am. Unless you happen to be Gregg McNair, you probably won&amp;#8217;t be doing that and will wake up the next morning with a massive hangover.
Times have changed. Domain investing has become a larger industry in and of itself. New people have entered the space, and it&amp;#8217;s not as collegial as it once was. The growth of domain investing has made a lot of people very wealthy, and there are plenty of negatives that come along with this. I don&amp;#8217;t think having an unsponsored TRAFFIC event will draw a big crowd, and I think it could hurt the TRAFFIC brand.

    <title>CreditCardMachines.com to be auctioned off at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Dublin ? Low Reserve</title>
    <description>I was particularly excited about creditcardmachines.com when I saw the agreement come in. I myself have had small businesses with a physical presence and know how expense these things can be.
In late August, at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Dublin we&amp;#8217;ll be auctioning off this domain and it is starting in the low 5-digits. This name is supposed to blow off the shelf.
We are largely turning into a paperless society and to date there are no logical alternatives to credit cards.
Businesses need credit card machines of all types and there are many out there. I love it when restaurant waiters carry the wireless ones. I don&amp;#8217;t have to worry about my card walking off.
There&amp;#8217;s tons of search traffic out there and the click prices are high. This name is a real gem.
Please contact us if you need to arrange for financing before the auction.
If you are interested in placing a bid remotely or talking about the name before the auction, reach out to RJ @ Latonas.com. He&amp;#8217;ll help guide you.

    <title>Domain Hack DealsPl.us Loses Case for DealsPlus.com</title>
    <description>
Company tries to get &amp;#8220;proper&amp;#8221; version of its domain through UDRP but fails.
&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s DealsPlus.  That&amp;#8217;s deals-p-l-dot-u-s.&amp;#8221;

    <title>Rick Latona Discusses TRAFFIC Dublin</title>
    <description>Here&amp;#8217;s the scoop on the next TRAFFIC conference.
TRAFFIC is taking the show on the road again next month, traveling to Dublin, Ireland August 24-25. Domain Name Wire caught up with show organizer Rick Latona to get the scoop on the show.
DNW: Why did you pick Dublin as one of the locations for this year?
Latona: Many Internet companies are setting up their European headquarters in Ireland. There are excellent tax advantages as well as a very tech friendly infrastructure. English is also a great benefit for us American companies that are exploring business opportunities. Ireland is far less expensive than Britain and of course, it&amp;#8217;s in the European Union. The beer is good too.
We go to Ireland often on business and wanted to show our American domainers who travel to the overseas shows and the main land Europeans the benefits of the environment.
DNW: At the Vancouver show you lowered prices but cut some of the extras. I understand the meals and parties are back for Dublin. What can people expect in terms of entertainment and food?

Latona: Domain Invest (.com, not to be confused with domaininvest.lu) is throwing a big dinner on the second night and Latona&amp;#8217;s will be sponsoring the opening night cocktail. Dublin is a great place to let loose a little because the bars aren&amp;#8217;t open so late that we&amp;#8217;ll get into too much trouble!
DNW: The Dublin show is only 2 days, as opposed to 2 1/2 to three at previous conferences. Why the change?
Latona: We understand that many people have been going to a lot of shows and they want to focus on their businesses. So, we&amp;#8217;ve jam packed the two days, cut the auction back to a single event and included parties on both days. It&amp;#8217;ll be a tiring two days but it&amp;#8217;ll be productive and to the point.
DNW: What new and different events or panels will people want to see at this TRAFFIC?
Latona: The Test Track is always good and our guests tell us often that it is their favorite part of the show. Sponsored by .CO the Test Track is the event where entrepreneurs can pitch their businesses to the panel of investors at the show. Please note that we still have room for applications if anyone is interested.
DNW: Looking forward, any updates/info about Hong Kong show?
Latona: The Hong Kong event isn&amp;#8217;t until November and we&amp;#8217;ll be posting updates about it soon enough. We want to focus on Dublin for now. That&amp;#8217;s one thing that we&amp;#8217;ve definitely learned this year. Focus on just one show at a time.

    <title>Bankrate May Sell Notes To Pay For CreditCards.com &amp; NetQuote Inc ?</title>
    <description>

This Bloomberg announcement caught my attention this morning. Its about a company called Bankrate who provide information on creditcards and mortgages.
The article speculates that Bankrate:
&amp;#8220;may sell $280 million of five- year notes to help pay for the acquisition of NetQuote Inc. and CreditCards.com Inc., according to a person familiar with the offering who declined to be identified because terms aren?t set. &amp;#8220;
According to the WSJ, it paid &amp;#8220;$145 million for CreditCards.com&amp;#8220;.
I&amp;#8217;m not one to speculate on things like this, but if true (and being a public company it will come out eventually) we have a public company that:
a) Has a huge asset (creditcards.com) on the books.
b) Is actively engaging in acquiring such a blue chip asset.
I hope they keep it (or sell it to me for $1 &amp;#8211; I&amp;#8217;d be happy either way).

    <link>http://localhost/public/newrsssite/main_sportsnews/24708/Why-Don-t-Some-Startups-Use-Their-Domain-Name-to-Brand-Their-Company-.html</link>
    <title>Why Don?t Some Startups Use Their Domain Name to Brand Their Company?</title>
    <description>I don&amp;#8217;t get it. I was reading another article on TechCrunch yesterday about a startup company whose brand name is different than the domain name that is being used by the company. I understand that many &amp;#8220;cool&amp;#8221; domain names aren&amp;#8217;t available in the .com, but in my opinion, the company should use another domain name that matches their brand, even if that means coming up with a unique name.
Take the payment company known as Square for example. Square.com has been registered for many years, so they had to use SquareUp.com.  Why not just brand themselves as Square Up instead of causing consumer confusion. Should the company grow extensively, they can afford to spend the money to buy Square.com and then rebrand as Square. This way, there&amp;#8217;s no confusion and they&amp;#8217;ll control both domain names. Sure, customers who go to Square.com will realize they&amp;#8217;re in the wrong place, but why would any company want to take a chance that they would lose a customer.
Yesterday I read about a startup called Lookout, and I visited Lookout.com to check them out. As you can probably tell by the title of the article, they aren&amp;#8217;t using Lookout.com, which was registered many years ago. Instead, they are using MyLookout.com, which isn&amp;#8217;t a bad domain name. I would think they could match it up and use My Lookout as their brand.
Assuming 15-30% of a start-up&amp;#8217;s traffic is type-in traffic, it doesn&amp;#8217;t make sense to add confusion to the market while increasing the value of the other .com that is parked and will earn more ppc revenue. As a result of this, the domain owner would be less likely to negotiate to sell the domain name, fearing that the company would try to entrap them by negotiating. Further, there is little reason to sell a domain name whose traffic and revenue consistently grows.
Many people will argue that the domain name isn&amp;#8217;t as important as the product or service being offered, and I agree wholeheartedly. However, I think it&amp;#8217;s silly to be known as one name but have a different domain name. Square and Lookout are just two of many start-up examples.

    <title>DomainMarketplace.com Launched by Internet REIT</title>
    <description>I haven&amp;#8217;t heard anything from or about Internet REIT in a while, but I received an email this afternoon from Lisa Box who is Vice President of Sales for iREIT. Lisa wrote to let me know about the launch of DomainMarketplace.com, a website that has iREIT-owned domain names for sale:
I hope this email finds you well.  I wanted to let you know we have recently launched www.domainmarketplace.com! Here you can search the iREIT inventory and buy directly from the site.  We are still testing&amp;#8230;&amp;#8221;
If you don&amp;#8217;t know about Internet REIT, you can learn more about the company on its LinkedIn page. They received funding from Maveron, were a big buyer of domain names a couple of years ago (I see several names I previously owned in this new website), ran into trademark issues, and their domain names receive millions of visitors each month.
DomainMarketplace.com has domain names priced from as low as the $50 range all the way up to 7 figures for OfficeSupply.com and Netster.com. It looks like they would also consider offers on their domain names as well.

    <title>13 Country Code Domains That Can Follow in .Co?s Footsteps</title>
    <description>Here are 13 ccTLDs just begging to be commercialized.
With the recent launch of .co, we&amp;#8217;ve seen another re-purposed country code domain name get international recognition. It joins other fairly successful commercializations such as .tv and .me, as well as failures such as .ws and .md.
Here are some other country code top level domain names that might have commercial potential, and my predicted marketing success for each one. But these countries better act fast, as soon they will have to compete with hundreds of new generic TLDs.
.AD (Andorra) &amp;#8211; Shortly after beginning the sunrise period, AOL claims rights to every .AD domain name based on its non-existent trademark for Ad.com.
.BJ (Benin) &amp;#8211; Fresh off the success of .xxx, ICM Registry expands its empire.
.BS (Bahamas) &amp;#8211; Tired of political BS? Bahamas will sell you the domain of your favorite politician.
.CD (Congo) &amp;#8211; Thousands of CD stores line up to register their .cd domain name, only to all go out of business before landrush.
.DJ (Djibouti) &amp;#8211; Thousands of DJs high on acid end up registering their own .dj domain name.
.EE (Estonia) &amp;#8211; Every electrical engineer is provided with a .ee domain name upon graduation.
.ET (Ethiopia) &amp;#8211; ET Phones Home with this launch.
.GM (Gambia) &amp;#8211; Every person who has lent money to General Motors gets a free domain name. Instantly, 300 million U.S. citizens become .gm domain registrants, creating the most successful TLD of all time.
.MO (Macao) &amp;#8211; Interviewees of Brian Null&amp;#8217;s MO.com get a free .mo domain. Because MO.com is just too long.
.MY (Malaysia) Hoping to piggyback on the success of .me, Malaysia markets .my domains, before figuring out that screw.my doesn&amp;#8217;t have the same ring to it as screw.me.
.NO (Norway) &amp;#8211; Thousands of corporate minions register .no domain names for corporate big wigs up the food chain who only know how to say &amp;#8220;NO!&amp;#8221;.
.PR (Puerto Rico) &amp;#8211; Step right up, PR firms!
.SM (San Marino) &amp;#8211; Another new market opportunity for ICM Registry.

    <title>Learn About Epik &amp; Rob Monster in Today?s Webcast</title>
    <description>Rob Monster is one of the most approachable people in the domain space, and I think his company has a good business model that may work for some domain investors. Epik just launched BumperProtectors.com this morning for my company, and as I promised, I will keep you apprised of the results in a future post.
For now though, I would like to remind you that Rob will be taking part in a free webcast this afternoon at 2pm EST (approximately 2 hours from now). The purpose is to learn more about Epik and Rob, and to learn how their services may be able to help you develop your domain names, as I did with BumperProtectors.com.
You need to sign up prior to the webcast to participate, so you might want to do that ASAP. I am sure this webcast will be available at a later point if you can&amp;#8217;t make it or have other things going on, but you&amp;#8217;ll want to check it out, especially if you&amp;#8217;ve never connected with Rob before.

    <description>Sahar, Good to hear from you. I just read about your life from those day of working on ice cream track. You deserve a good life, so I&amp;#8217;m happy you&amp;#8217;re on to it. Anyway, I&amp;#8217;m tired of reading all the domain &amp;amp; business related post&amp;#8217;s and really wished you could give me some good reading about the &amp;#8220;real life&amp;#8221;.
I do understand the meaning of meaningful life will more clear when you&amp;#8217;re some one someday and wished you could back at where you started. I&amp;#8217;m not somebody yet, so I will continue to experiment what&amp;#8217;s life about&amp;#8230;..
Good days to you.
Regards,
Mano

    <title>WIPO Panelist Calls Juice Bar?s Assertions ?Mystifying?</title>
    <description>
Juice bar wants .com, but will have to pay for it.
A WIPO UDRP panelist has ruled against a juice bar called &amp;#8220;Juicy Details&amp;#8221;, calling the complainant&amp;#8217;s assertions about bad faith registration of JuicyDetails.com &amp;#8220;Mystifying&amp;#8221;.
Juicy Details, based in the Netherlands, filed the complaint against Another.com, which owns JuicyDetails.com. But the panelist thought Juicy Detail&amp;#8217;s accusations didn&amp;#8217;t add up:
The Panel finds these assertions mystifying. From the record in this proceeding, it appears that the Complainant, a Dutch company, was only established in 2002 and operated only in the Netherlands. It applied for a Benelux trademark registration in March 2002 and did not obtain a Community Trade Mark until January 2009. The Complainant registered a domain name based on its JUICY DETAILS mark in the ?.nl? country domain in March 2002, but the Complainant does not indicate when it launched a commercial website associated with that domain name. The Internet Archive?s Wayback Machine displays no archived copies of a website associated with the Complainant?s domain name until 2003, when the page simply displayed a message in Dutch to the effect that a website would appear ?shortly?. There is no evidence in the record that the Complainant operated or advertised in the United Kingdom, where the Respondent is located, in 2002. Thus, it is not clear how the Respondent would have been aware of the Complainant?s mark in May 2002, when it registered the Domain Name in the United Kingdom, unless it examined the records of Benelux trademark applications. The Panel does not read the Policy as requiring such an investigation.
The Respondent denies prior knowledge of the Complainant or its mark, and this is plausible in the circumstances. Moreover, the mark consists of two English dictionary words, commonly used as a phrase to denote gossip or titillating information.
Why is Juicy Details interested in the .com? It operates at JuicyDetails.nl, and wants to expand outside the Netherlands.

    <title>.CO is Google-National</title>
    <description>Google has announced that the .CO Top-Level Domain (TLD) will have all the same geo-targeting options available to the other generic TLDs, such as .com, .net, .biz and .org.

&amp;#8220;We will rank .co domains appropriately if the content is globally targeted. Webmasters will soon have the functionality to be able to specify this by using the geotargeting options in Google Webmaster Tools,&amp;#8221; said a Google spokesperson, as quoted in PC Pro in a July 22nd article.

This was then confirmed by Andrew Allemann of Domain Name Wire in his blog about .CO on the same day who spoke with another Google representative that confirmed the news.

This is great for all! Now, .CO websites can be targeted to meet your business and communication needs anywhere around the world!

    <link>http://localhost/public/newrsssite/main_sportsnews/24689/-ORG-Inserts-DNSSEC-Key-Into-The-Root-Zone.html</link>
    <title>.ORG Inserts DNSSEC Key Into The Root Zone</title>
    <description>.ORG, The Public Interest Registry (PIR) announced it has inserted its Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) key into the Internet root zone, joining the top of the Internet&amp;#8217;s &amp;#8220;chain of trust.&amp;#8221; As the first generic top-level domain (TLD) to offer full DNSSEC deployment, the news dovetails .ORG&amp;#8217;s June announcement that the third largest top-level domain is now signing second-level delegations.

The protocol benefits top-level domain (TLD) managers and end-users alike by enabling the publication and location of trust anchors in the root zone and providing a consistent and convenient entry point to DNS security.

&amp;#8220;Today is a historic day for DNSSEC and the Internet at large,&amp;#8221; said Alexa Raad, chief executive officer of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry. &amp;#8220;Now, over 8 million .ORG users&amp;#8212;as well as their Internet service providers&amp;#8212;can sign their domains and increase protection with relative ease. In addition, with DNSSEC at the root zone, users and domain managers need only trust a single source in order to receive the highest level of Internet security available.&amp;#8221;

By deploying DNSSEC, domain name owners benefit from the ability to thwart cache poisoning and man-in-the-middle attacks and the assistance in mitigating attacks like pharming, phishing, DNS redirection and domain hijacking&amp;#8212;all of which have been used to commit fraud, distribute malware, and identity theft. Additionally, DNSSEC upgrades the current Internet infrastructure by protecting Internet resolvers from forged DNS data.

On June 23 at ICANN 38 Brussels, PIR&amp;#8212;the manager of the .ORG domain&amp;#8212;announced that it had enabled the signing of second level domains. The move marked the final step in an extensive two-year process, placing .ORG at the helm of DNSSEC deployment.
